From the same famed lieu-dit, or single vineyard terroirs occupied by the iconic Clos Rougeard, this bottle is an insight into one of the Loire Valley’s top, top wines. The well informed Dominique-Joseph, or Pélo (or ‘dude), as his friends call him affectionately, is quite the character among the Loire Valley winemakers, always telling stories and the first to share news hot off the press from other winemaking regions.

His personality is certainly reflected in his energetic, fragrant and high quality bottles. Pélo meticulously manages his old vines, which provide incredible concentration and finesse in the final bottles. Le Poyeux is on a specific type of yellow sand, which, in our experience, leads to highly aromatised wines which permeate the glass; there are pockets in England too, and you often find the best English bottles on this type of sand. No sulphur is added, to maintain the purity of this Cabernet Franc. It then undergoes a touch of oak, finally aged in bottle for two years before release, in Péo’s underground caves which sprawl under Saumur, where he frequently invites friends for musical jamming sessions.
