Cantina Bolzano Pinot Grigio St Magdalena 2024
£16.00
A cooperative formed of thirty wine growers in 1908 decided to start the first cooperative in the region. 18 more, different growers formed another co-operative in the 1930s. These cooperatives are commonplace in the wineworld, allowing people with only a few hectares of vines and no means to build a winery to either sell their fruit, or make wine in collaboration with others. Cantina Bolzano formed as a result of these two historic co-ops in Alto Adige. Now, it’s one of the largest, and highest quality cooperatives in Italy, boasting over 240 members.
Bolzano boasts a truly stunning winery visible for miles on the hillside. A large cube acts like a beacon, with bronze mesh sculpted into the shape of vine leaves creating an unmistakable landmark. Locally, it’s known as the cellar in the vineyard, and Bozen describes itself as ‘subalpine’, with the cellars built into the foot of the cliffside. These cellars are akin to the masses of caves dug into the earth in France’s Champagne, and Hungary’s Tokaj.
