Amorotti Trebbiano d'Abruzzo 2020
£49.00
This is my wine discovery of the year. In April, I was blinded three Trebbiano’s from Abruzzo - Amorotti, Valentini, and Emidio Pepe. I was absolutely besotted with this wine, and will go as far as to say it will be my wine discovery of the year. Trebbiano at it’s best, is among my favourite white grape varieties, for it’s ageing potential, the combination of salinity (especially in Abruzzo). Gaetano Carboni a lawyer born in 1976, revived his family's farm in a place called Loreto Aprutino in the early 2010s, dedicating 5 of 50 hectares to organic vines, guided by the likes of Emidio Pepe, to produce wines of true Abruzzo terroir, intervening minimally in the winemaking process. All Amorotti wines are pristine, with an incredibly expressive stye. Vines are planted at 350 meters on clay-chalk soils, benefiting from Gran Sasso's cooling and Adriatic moderation,The 2023 vintage, challenged by mildew and erratic weather, produced linear wines; hand-picked Trebbiano Abruzzese undergoes spontaneous fermentation in a mixture of stainless steel and concrete, with extended lees contact (6-8 months) for texture, no oak, fining, or filtration. Some skin contact adds complexity and is noticeable in the glass.
